Mexican officials say a suspect has been arrested after nine members of a family from a Mormon community were killed in northern Mexico near the border with the United States. The arrest was announced Tuesday.
According to CNN, the suspect was found in the hills outside Agua Prieta in Sonora state holding two bound hostages. Authorities said he had several rifles and a large amount of ammunition. The arrest came a day after a convoy of women and children was attacked by armed men while driving, Mexican authorities said.
The motive has not been confirmed. Former Mexican foreign minister Jorge Castañeda told CNN that the LeBaron family community has faced tension with criminal groups and with neighboring communities over water rights, and that federal police protection around the community was reduced earlier this year. He said it was unclear how many officers were pulled back. Family member Kendra Lee Miller told reporters that cartels have taken too many of their relatives.
