In a revealing new book, “A Song for You: My Life With Whitney Houston,” the singer’s closest friend Robyn Crawford shares intimate details and memories about the woman she knew and loved for over three decades.
According to PEOPLE, Crawford disclosed what it was like to be by Whitney’s side as she exploded into superstardom. She also talked about Houston’s relationship with Eddie Murphy, revealing that even while she was heavily pursued by Bobby Brown back in 1989, “She was more interested in Eddie Murphy, but he was elusive.” She said, her dear friend, “lost herself” in the pursuit of the comedian.
“One day when Eddie was supposed to come for dinner, I caught a glimpse of Whitney,” she wrote, as she revealed her feelings of jealousy. ”She was wearing a black dress and low-heeled slingbacks. For a moment, I thought ‘Boy, I wish she was doing that for me.’”
However, Crawford recalled that by then, their romantic relationship had been over for several years. But, Murphy “never showed up that night,” Crawford explained, admitting it was a rejection which left Houston devastated.
Even though Murphy played games, he did call Whitney on the morning of July 18, 1992, the day of her wedding to singer Bobby Brown.
“[That day] Eddie Murphy called to say she was making a mistake,” Crawford wrote, “but she pressed ahead.”
Throughout her often troubled relationships with men, Crawford said she always remained Houston’s most loyal and steadfast protector.
Crawford said she hopes the book will remind people what a big-hearted and generous friend Houston was.
“I have a lot of beautiful, wonderful, exciting, adventurous, loving, caring memories of Whitney,” she said. “Whitney was a beautiful friend, the friend that I prayed for.”
