Back in September, Kanye West took his Sunday Service to Atlanta to fellowship among Black Hollywood’s elite at Dr. Jamal H. Bryant’s New Birth Missionary Baptist Church. Several celebrities, including 2 Chainz and T.I., joined the congregation, and even Dr. Bryant acknowledged West’s impact, highlighting a revolution for the “new generation through unconventional methods with an uncompromising message.”
Weeks later, West traveled to Salt Lake City, Utah to, once again, hold his traveling church service, but this time, the Chicago-native took time to realign himself with Trump and the Republican Party.
“Abraham Lincoln was the Whig Party – that’s the Republican Party that freed the slaves,” West said. “I ain’t never make a decision based only on my color. That’s a form of slavery – mental slavery. I ain’t drink from the white person foundation. …I ain’t playing with them. All these mind controllers, the media, all these mind controllers. I find that wherever Christ is where I’ve got my mind at. We find that love of Christ is where I’ve got my mind back.”
However, West’s reaffirmed allegiance forced Bryant to distance himself from the rapper, saying, “The same Donald Trump who, in fact, brought in all the presidents of the United Negro College Fund-HBCUs-and promised them he would give them funding – ain’t given them a dime. And still, he says he supports him.”
“I don’t align with the statements of Kanye West,” Bryant added on Roland Martin’s ‘Unfiltered,’ before he revealed he redirected West’s church donation to Morris Brown College instead. But now, nearly two months after the Atlanta service, Bryant has revisited the topic, calling his political views “indigestible.”
“Reading in between the lines…,” Bryant wrote under an IGTV video of his sermon. “Kanye West project is incredible, but his politics are indigestible. The message after the music is just as important. Jesus is King, and Trump is a jester. Our theology doesn’t match this administration’s politics….the revolution won’t be televised.”
