A mother in Lithonia, Georgia, says she is relieved her young daughter made it home safely after the child was taken off her school bus and ended up getting a ride from a stranger. Johneisha told WSB TV that her 6 year old, a student at Fairington Elementary School, arrived home about two hours late roughly three weeks ago. According to the station, three first graders were involved.
Johneisha says she went to the school and then to the district transportation department looking for answers. She told WSB TV that a transportation supervisor explained that when a driver removes a student from the bus, the driver is responsible for making sure the child is handed to a school administrator. She says that did not happen. She also said her anger was at “a 10” because she feels no one is doing anything about it.
The district and the parents tell different stories. According to WSB TV, school district officials said at least three students were disruptive on the bus and that the driver removed them back at the school. Parents say the children were let off near the school with no adults around, and that the 6 year olds, unsure what to do, began walking and trying to find their way home.
The children were eventually picked up by a woman who stopped, put them in her car and drove each child home. Johneisha says she wants to thank that woman, and that she is grateful nothing worse happened.
WSB TV reported that the school district does not appear likely to discipline the bus driver. The district has not publicly responded to the parents’ version of events beyond its statement to the station.
