A mosquito-borne illness alert for Dengue Fever is in effect for Miami Dade County, after the Florida Department of Health announced another confirmed case of the locally transmitted virus, bringing the year’s total to 11.

According to the Miami Herald, a person can contract dengue through the bite of an Aedes aegypti mosquito, which is the very same mosquito that spreads chikungunya and the dreaded Zika virus.

Dengue can cause a fever and other symptoms, including vomiting, headache, and eye pain, but according to the health department, not every infected person will experiences symptoms.

Miami-Dade currently has the most cases of locally transmitted dengue in the state. Back in September,  Broward county reported it’s one and only locally transmitted case.

There are significantly more travel-related dengue cases. The Florida department of health said as of Nov. 16, there have been 342 cases statewide, with most cases related to Cuba travel.
