Following Spotify’s announcement of a new award show that would be centered around streaming numbers, Apple has introduced its own bid in the newfound class of award shows.
In a press release, Apple described the purpose of creating its own means of honoring artists. ”The Apple Music Awards honor achievements in music across five distinct categories and winners are chosen through a process that reflects the service’s editorial perspective, combined with what customers around the world are loving most,” the release read.
The first annual Apple Music Awards will honor acts in music in the categories of Album of the Year and Song of the Year, which are both decided by Apple Music streaming data, while the company’s editorial team determines Global Artist of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, and Breakthrough Artist of the Year.
The company released its impressive list of award winners, who will be honored live on December 4th at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple Park. Lizzo is amongst the honorees, being crowned Breakthrough Artist of the Year, accompanied by Lil Nas X, who received Song of the Year for his breakout hit “Old Town Road.”
Billie Eilish will walk away as the most awarded of the artists, taking home both the Artist of the Year and Global Artist of the Year award, as well as Album of the Year for WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? She is also splitting the award for Songwriter of the Year with her brother, Finneas O’Connell. WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? was the most streamed album on the platform this year, with over 1 billion streams.
