#MariahCarey said she didn’t want a lot for Christmas, but Santa is definitely dropping off some gifts. The singer-writer is the first artist to top the #Billboard Hot 100 in four decades with her hit “All I Want for Christmas Is You.”
According to Billboard, the hit song has now spent third week atop the latest Hot 100, dated Jan. 4, 2020, having first led the charts dated Dec. 21 and Dec. 28, 2019. The song was originally released in 1994 and became Carey’s 19th No. 1, after she earned 14 leaders in the 1990s and four in the 2000s.
Holiday songs currently rank in the top four spots at the same time and for the first time in the chart’s 61 years of existence. Behind Carey’s songs are Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Bobby Helms’ “Jingle Bell Rock,” and Burl Ives’ “A Holly Jolly Christmas.” Carey’s “Christmas,” on Columbia/Legacy Records, tops the Streaming Songs chart for a fourth consecutive week, and fifth total frame (after a week at No. 1 last holiday season), and increased 33 percent to 72.2 million U.S. streams in the week ending Dec. 26, according to Nielsen Music. Numbers were also boosted after the release of the song’s new music video, which debuted on Dec. 20. It also sold 17,000 digital copies 30.9 million radio impressions across that time frame.
Additionally, “Christmas” is the eighth song with at least 72.2 million U.S. streams in a single week. #LilNasX’s “Old Town Road,” featuring Billy Ray Cyrus, holds the record, with 143 million, as reflected on the Streaming Songs chart dated April 20, 2019. Carey’s “Christmas” concurrently tops the streaming-, sales- and airplay-based Holiday 100 chart for a 40th total week, of the 45 overall frames in the chart’s history, dating to its 2011 inception, Billboard reports.
“When it first came out, it was more of a gradual thing,” Carey previously told Entertainment Weekly in an interview. about the track’s success. “It was popular, but it didn’t have what it has now. I feel like people have grown up with the song, and it’s become a part of people’s lives in terms of the way they celebrate the holidays. That makes me feel really proud as someone that loves Christmas so much.”
