Cam Newton and his longtime girlfriend Kia have reportedly been separated for months and are now in a legal fight over custody and child support, according to court papers obtained by Bossip.
Bossip reported on January 16 that the couple has been apart for at least six months. They share four children, the youngest of whom was born in September 2019.
According to Bossip, Newton filed a case asking the court to establish paternity and to grant joint custody and visitation. The filing reportedly says he has always acknowledged the children and signed their birth certificates, but that he now wants DNA testing. He also reportedly says he has been voluntarily paying child support and wants the court to set an amount. Once he is legally recognized as the father, he reportedly wants joint physical custody.
Kia countersued, Bossip reports, asking for full physical custody, child support, health benefits and life insurance for the children, plus her legal and expert fees. Her filing reportedly says Newton is the father and that she has no objection to a DNA test as long as he pays for it. She also reportedly says she is open to negotiating.
Newton’s lawyer told Bossip that the Carolina Panthers quarterback prefers not to comment on the case and hopes the two sides can work things out privately.
