Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, will no longer use the titles “royal highness” or receive public funds after a deal was struck for them to step aside as senior royals.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the palace also stated that the couple will repay some 2.4 million pounds ($3.1 Million) of taxpayers’ money that was spent renovating their home near Windsor Castle.
“The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are grateful to Her Majesty and the Royal Family for their ongoing support as they embark on the next chapter of their lives,” the statement from Buckingham Palace noted.
The couple will keep their Duke and Duchess titles but will no longer be referred to as “HRH”— his or her royal highness. This is apparently by choice, not by force. Prince Harry will also remain sixth in line to the throne.
While the pair can no longer represent the queen, their actions will still “uphold the values of Her Majesty.”
“Harry, Meghan, and Archie will always be much-loved members of my family,” Queen Elizabeth said in the official statement.
The changes will reportedly be enacted this spring.
