The 2004 hit film ‘Mean Girls’ written by Tina Fey, has had a big influence on pop culture. Now, 16 years later, the film is still changing the game.
After taking the film to broadway turning it into a musical, Deadline now reports that the musical is headed to theaters.
While there is no director set for the upcoming production at this time, the film will be distributed through Paramount, who released the original comedy that grossed nearly $130 million.
Fey is back to write the scripts as she’s previously done with the original film and the musical’s book, while Lorne Michaels (who produced the first film) will join the project as well, Deadline reports.
Music for the production will be penned by Richmond and Nell Benjamin.
The musical, which was nominated for 12 Tony’s, follows the story of Cady Heron, who, after returning to the U.S. following being raised in Africa, struggles to gain popularity at school.
The musical tour is on a run throughout the U.S. currently and, according to producers, will hit London’s west end, in spring 2021, Deadline reports.
