The Recording Academy spoke out after Deborah Dugan made allegations against its prestigious nomination process, Thursday morning on Good Morning America.

During the interview, Former Recording Academy President and CEO Dugan said the Grammy Awards voting process is “ripe with corruption.”

Dugan also filed a complaint with allegations of sexual harassment at the hands of Recording Academy general Joel Katz. She even made claims that Neil Portnow, her predecessor, raped a female recording artist, during his time in office.

However, The Recording Academy released the statement Thursday, defending its process and denying Dugan’s claims.

“It is the goal of the Recording Academy to ensure the Grammy Awards process is led in a fair and ethical manner and that voting members make their choices based solely on the artistic excellence and technical merits of eligible recordings,” Bill Freimuth said in a statement reported by Deadline.

Freimuth denied allegations that members of the committee use their process to nominate artists who they have relationships with.
