Earlier this month, it was announced that Yo Gotti and Jay-Z, with the help of Team Roc, were bringing forth a lawsuit against the Mississippi Department of Corrections for mistreatment against their inmates.
Now, the Memphis rapper is opening up in an interview with Business Insider about the lawsuit and what moved him to get involved.
“The first day I seen the pictures, I started looking into it. Me being from Memphis, Mississippi, is like our tri-state area. It’s so close to home.”
He continued, “I knew we had to do something immediately. Got with Team Roc, the whole Roc Nation team, who feel just as passionate, and the situation is just as important to everybody over there, too, and we decided to take action.”
Gotti, whose real name is Mario Mims, also spoke to why he wanted Hov’s help on the mission, showing admiration for the way the mogul is using his voice to stand up for the causes he’s passionate about.
“I respect him because he stand up for what he believe in, which I think every man should. You know, things that’s important to you, things you passionate about, you should fight for it.”
In the midst of his social justice efforts, the rapper is gearing up to release his long awaited 10th studio album, “Untrapped,” which will drop on January 31st. The album features his 2019 hit record “Put a Date On It” with Lil Baby and “Pose,” alongside Lil Uzi Vert. While Megan Thee Stallion is featured on the remix, it is not clear which version will make the album.
“I think my messaging in this album is going to be very strong. The space I’m in today, the space I’ve been in in the last six to eight months, the things I’m talking about on the album.” He revealed, regarding his musical growth.
“I just think it’s gonna be a strong message, really, for young hustlers. You’re a young hustler, you’re a young boss, this album really for you. Or you want to be a boss one day, this the project that’s for you.”
