The tiny, animated caricatures that have become a part of everyday conversation are now getting more gender-inclusive. Smartphones everywhere will now have a host of new emojis this year that will include women dressed in tuxedos, the transgender flag, bottle-feeding parents, gender-neutral Santa and many more as part of of the 2020 emoji update from the Unicode Consortium, the organization that sets the standards for emoji compatibility, according to CNN. In addition to gender-inclusion, they also focused on cultural inclusion with the “Italian Hand Gesture” emoji, widely used in Italian culture to express confusion, disbelief, or rejection.
Among the gender-inclusive symbols are a mustachioed man in a wedding veil and gender-neutral person wearing a tuxedo.
The 117 brand new emojis will hit smartphones later this year with the Emoji 13.0 release.
