Back in 2012, the Academy Awards’ Museum of Motion Pictures was announced with plans to open in 2017. But now, after countless delays and more than $368 million raised, the museum will finally open its doors later this year.
Tom Hanks, trustee and co-chair of the Academy Museum campaign, announced the news on Sunday at the 92nd annual Oscars, alongside campaign chair and Disney CEO Bob Iger.
“There’s plenty of culture to be found in the City of Angels,” Hanks said during the live telecast. “But there has never been a museum dedicated to the art and science of motion pictures.”
The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, which is currently under construction, will feature an “unparalleled collection of photographs, film and video assets, iconic costumes, and more,” according to the museum’s website.
“We cannot wait to welcome the whole world to the Academy Museum,” Academy Museum director, Bill Kramer said. “When our doors open on Dec. 14, our thrilling combination of exhibitions, screening, and public and educational programs will create unparalleled experiences for movie lovers everywhere.”
The museum will be located on the corner of Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. It will also include a slew of other important items, like the 1,000 seat David Geffen Theater, a look into the world of Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli animated films, and much more.
