Late last week, Essence kicked off its 13th annual Black Women in Hollywood Awards Luncheon, honoring a few “phenomenal black women who deserved to be seen.”

The event occurred just days before the Oscars and highlighted many of the Black women creators and creatives, who were otherwise overlooked in Hollywood. Ahead of the Luncheon, June Ambrose spoke with Baller Alert, sharing a few words of wisdom being a visionary.

“Don’t ask for permission,” Ambrose said. “WE have creative license; we have ownership. Just get it done and just go, and don’t be distracted.”

“I think that when you move with that kind of fire and that fury, they can’t even catch up. Before they know it, it’s just smoke,” Ambrose added. “You’re a flame. We all have such incredible, magnetic energy,  especially as black women. So I say to harness that, hold on to it, spread that heat and keep it moving.”

As she continued, Ambrose opened up about stepping out on faith, and how she continues to push forward.

“Sometimes it’s easier when you’re young, but I still try to do it everyday of my life now,” Ambrose said. “Do things that scare me, things that make me uncomfortable. I think that those things are super important because that’s living. I just encourage everyone that’s on a journey to something, in order to feel success, you have to feel fear.”

“On the other side  of fear, there’s huge success,” she said, before adding that Black women in Hollywood are “magical.”
