BA Exclusive: Shahadi Wright Joseph Talks Growing As An Actress Talks And Black Representation: I Definitely Believe There Should Be More Representation”

Shahadi Wright Joseph talks her role in “Us” and why it’s so important to see Black representation.

Baller Alert hit the red carpet for this year’s Essence Black Women in Hollywood Awards and got to chat with “Us” star Shahadi Wright Joseph. This is Wright Joseph’s first time attending the #BlackGirlMagic-filled event and she took the time to share what it means to be amongst other successful Black women.

“It just fills so incredible and I can feel the positive energy around us, all around us. I really just feel at home,” she explained. The conversation carried over to the young actress’ stellar performance in the #JordanPeele-led film “Us.” Wright Joseph said there’s still a need for more Black faces on-and-off screen.

“Well, I definitely believe that there should be more representation in Hollywood, so it feels amazing to see that there are characters like my character in Us. As you can see, there are so many people here just supporting that. So it feels so incredible to have people supporting me just because of that,” said the 14-year-old star.

When it comes to growing as an artist, Wright Joseph says she’s blossoming more and more creatively. “I feel like I’ve definitely grown as an actress, and I think that I just really need to accept myself just for being me, ya know, and not really changing anything about myself.”
