Issa Rae’s on-screen romances are heating up, as the actress and producer is co-starring in two romantic films, “The Photograph,” alongside Lakeith Stanfield and the upcoming rom-com “The Lovebirds,” with comedian Kumail Nanjiani. Both films standout, as they both delve into relationships of color, something that is not often seen in film.

“Every time there’s an interracial romance, it feels like it centers on whiteness, and it doesn’t have to,” Rae told Variety before adding, “Just so you know, there are people who don’t procreate with just white people.”

Rae was always vocal about her support of the black community, but most recently, she vocalized her disdain for the predominantly white male nominees at this year’s Oscars. While the 35-year-old stands by her words, she revealed that the constant questions about diversity in Hollywood are getting old, especially since she is doing her part to make a way for women, particularly, women of color.

“I don’t feel like it’s up to me to answer those questions. Like, I’m doing the work. I’m out here. I’m employing who I need to employ, I’m telling the stories that I need to tell. Those questions need to be asked to the powers-that-be. It needs to be asked to the white people who run this industry.”

In addition to the big screen, Rae is gearing up to return to the small screen with the fourth season of her hit HBO series “Insecure.” The coming of age series returns on April 12.
