Legendary reggae pioneer Bob Marley is getting his own musical in London.
“Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Story” is set to debut in London next year. The Stage Play Trim the Wind, and Playful Productions-produced musical will feature music by Marley and will begin previews at the Lyric Theatre in London on February 6th, 2021. Tickets go on sale on April 21st.
Marley’s daughter, Cedella Marley, praised the musical in a statement.
“Our father’s music means so much to so many people around the world, we’re beyond thrilled to be able to bring it to both fans and new audiences alike in a new way led by the stellar team of Lee Hall and Dominic Cooke, and starring the fantastic Arinzé. As a family, we feel that our father would be proud to know that his legacy is a source of creative inspiration and continues to bring people together.”
Playwright and Screenwriter Lee Hall, who is the mastermind behind other stellar productions such as 2019’s “Rocketman,” wrote the musical and used Marley’s lyrics to tell his personal story as an artist. The musical will star British actor Arinzé Kene as Marley.
“I feel absolutely honored to be able to take on this role. It is not only an honor to be able to spread Bob Marley’s message further, but to get to be him for a little while is a lifelong dream come true.” Kene said in a statement.
