Actress and writer Lena Waithe will voice the role of Pixar’s first openly gay character, a lesbian police officer, in the upcoming animated film, “Onward.” Moviegoers have long speculated about Disney couples that were in same-sex relationships, including the female pair in 2016’s “Finding Dory.” The 2017 live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast,” had the first openly gay character in a Disney film. Pixar is a subsidiary of Disney, so this is a first for the company.
The purple unicorn named Officer Spector makes mentions of her “girlfriend” in the film, making it clear that she is a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community.
“My girlfriend’s daughter got me pulling my hair out,” Waithe’s character complains to her partner, another character voiced by comedian Ali Wong, Slate reports.
“Onward,” will arrive in theaters on March 6th. Octavia Spencer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Tom Holland, Chris Pratt, and John Ratzenberger also voice characters in the animated fantasy.
