Niecy Nash recently turned 50 and went through a divorce from her husband of eight years, Jay Tucker. Despite any of this, the actress says she has never been better.
“At this age, you live long enough to know that you don’t owe nobody nothing,” the Claws star told PEOPLE in this week’s issue.
Nash and Tucker announced their divorce last October via social media. Spectators immediately had much to say, considering how much of the marriage was documented on social media and even inspired her to release a relationship advice book in 2013, It’s Hard to Fight Naked.
“I wrote a book about love, and people were then on social media going, ‘Oh, so I guess all that stuff you put in that book didn’t work?’” she said. “I still believe every single thing I said in that book, but I also believe that sometimes for some people, forever ain’t forever, it’s for now.”
Nash explained that the couple realized that they suited one another better as friends.
“It was less about the divorce being painful because I feel like when you get to a point where you both understand we were better friends than partners, we’re on the same page. But when people don’t agree with that, and they try to make you do what they want you to do, that’s the part where you kind of get out of order.”
No matter the backlash that she has received from fans who considered the couple to be #goals, she is not interested in keeping up with the masses nor their opinions.
“Some people are still together for their Instagram. You better live for you!”
