The legendary Lynn Whitfield recently spoke with Baller Alert about the importance of ceremonies like the NAACP Image Awards, where Hollywood’s best gathers to celebrate the extraordinary works of art by people of color.
During the ceremony, Whitfield won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award for her role in Greenleaf.
When asked what honors like this would be a testimony to, she answered, “Honors like this are a testimony to your tenacity, your living by the passion that God put inside you, living with the belief that you have something to share, and validation of all of that because people are watching it.”
As she continued, Lynn said that she learned a lot about herself in Josephine Baker. “I learned about a fear of poverty, I learned about compensating, and I learned that I didn’t want to put off having children until the end of my career, so I had got married and had my daughter right after that.”
