Disney + and Lizzie McGuire star Hilary Duff are reportedly not on the same page with the direction of the reboot, and fans will have to wait a little longer for its launch.
According to Variety, sources said Duff and Terri Minsky, the show’s creator and showrunner, wanted to create a more evolved “adult version” of the beloved tween show, but Disney was looking to keep it kid-friendly.
The source also told Variety that even if a new showrunner came in to try and balance both visions of the reboot, it would be “unlikely” for the project to move forward.
The show had already filmed a couple of episodes — which stars Duff as the titular character, a now 30-year-old millennial living in New York City — when Disney+ announced that Minsky had exited and so far a replacement hasn’t been announced.
However, a spokesperson for Disney would only say that the show was halted for “creative re-development.”
“We paused production on Lizzie McGuire a few weeks ago to allow time for some creative re-development. Our goal is to resume production and to tell an authentic story that connects to the millions who are emotionally invested in the character, and a new generation of viewers too,” the spokesperson said to People.
Fans of Lizzie have been excited about the reboot ever since it was announced last August during the D23 Expo convention.
Duff shared back in October that most of the original cast would be returning to reprise their roles.
The original Lizzie McGuire series, created by Minsky, ran from 2001 to 2004. The show followed a 13-year-old Lizzie, who dreamt of being popular in school and showcased her animated alter ego that represented her true feelings.
The popularity of the show even spawned a film, The Lizzie McGuire Movie, in which Lizzie went on a trip of a lifetime to Rome, Italy, following her 8th-grade graduation and was mistaken for an international pop star.
The show is currently on hiatus while Duff celebrates her recent wedding with a South African honeymoon.
