A dog belonging to a woman with confirmed coronavirus (COVID-19) has been quarantined after testing positive for the virus. According to sources, the dog did not have any symptoms of the virus prior to testing, and it’s unclear if the animal is actually infected with the virus.
Officials in Hong Kong revealed the news on Friday, explaining that the dog’s nasal and oral samples tested “weak positive.” There hasn’t been sufficient evidence whether or not the virus can be transmitted to pets.
The Agriculture, Fisheries, and Conservation Department (AFCD) has announced plans to conduct additional tests to determine whether or not the dog is infected. In a statement, the AFCD said: “The AFCD does not have evidence that pet animals can be infected… or can be a source of infection to people.”
The dog will reportedly remain in quarantine in Hong Kong for two weeks, where there are 65 confirmed cases of coronavirus.
