World Of Beer Bartender Charged For Overserving A Drunk Driver That Caused The Death Of a Good Samaritan

Former World of Beer bartender, Miguel Rizo, 25, has been charged with a misdemeanor liquor violation for overserving 26-year-old Zachary Castro at the bar.

The incident occurred on January 26, after an intoxicated Castro got behind the steering wheel of his pick-up truck and eventually ran over a group of people as they tended to a disabled vehicle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

According to Harris County deputies, Mayra Ospina, 23, her boyfriend Luis Ramirez, and a few other drivers pulled over on the side of the road to help a vehicle stuck in a ditch.

On the night of the crash, Castro was traveling at about 65 miles per hour before he reportedly slammed his Toyota Tundra into the group, throwing Ospina over the hood of his truck. Ramirez survived, but Ospina was declared brain dead and passed away at a hospital days later.

Castro was initially charged with intoxication assault, but the death of Ospina upgraded the charges to intoxication manslaughter.

Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg said in a statement to KRTK, “The death and terrible injuries inflicted on these Good Samaritans could have been avoided.”

Officials say Rizo continued to serve Castro, even though he showed signs of intoxication. Castro told investigators he had six beers and four shots before leaving the bar.

In a statement to ABC13, World of Beers confirmed Castro is no longer working for the company and said the establishment was “deeply saddened by the tragic event.”

Ramirez is now suing the World of Beers in Cypress, claiming the restaurant is liable for its employee’s negligent acts.
