Another week, another claim of the Kardashian-Jenner clan, appropriating black culture.
Recently Kim Kardashian-West took to social media to debut her new hairstyle, reviving her controversial ”Bo Derek Braid” look.
Following her reveal, the reality star received backlash from fans who say she was, once again, stealing from black culture.
However, musician and ex-boyfriend Ray J and his sister R&B legend Brandy recently defended Kardashian-West during their guest appearance on daytime talk show The Talk.
When asked their opinion on her choice of style, they took it as a “compliment,” as opposed to anything negative.
“I don’t think that she’s guilty,” Brandy, 41, said. “I definitely believe in that, but I think it’s reaching a little bit for people to say that.”
“I mean, it’s great. I love braids. I think everybody should have braids, but I think we’re going too far with that with her,” she continued as she wore a similar hairstyle herself during the interview.
Ray J, 39, also gave his opinion on the situation, stating that Kardashian West is just paying homage and that it’s a style that’s going “global.”
“I got nothing but respect,” he said. “I just think that if you are paying homage to another culture by, you know, rocking the braids; I think it’s a compliment.”
The “I Hit It First” singer went on to call Kardashian West’s hairstyle a compliment stating, “I think that when you get up and you feel good, and you look good, and other people say, ‘Hey, I want to look like that,’ I want to feel good … it should be a compliment and a plus.”
This isn’t the first time Kardashian West has faced backlash amid fans claiming she’s appropriating other cultures.
According to PEOPLE, back in 2018, she rocked ‘Fulani’ braids calling them ‘Bo Derek’ braids and faced similar criticism to which she responded, the braids instead represents a “real place of love and appreciation.”
She further explained her choice to try out different ‘beauty trends’ during a panel at BeautyCon in LA, stating, “I’ve definitely had my fair share of backlash when I’ve worn braids. I’ve been fortunate to be able to travel around the world and see so many different cultures that have so many different beauty trends.”
