On Thursday, misdemeanor charges were formally dropped against Nyisha Beemon following her arrest the night her daughter was fatally shot in an Avalon Park convenience store last week.
Her daughter, 18-year-old nursing student Jaya Beemon, was one of five people shot inside a South Side convenience store while buying snacks on February 25th. Jaya stopped there along with her date, who was also shot in the neck. However, he was stabilized at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The other three injured were a 17-year-old girl shot in the arm, chest, and ankle; an 18-year-old woman shot in the back, and a 63-year-old man shot in the leg, the Chicago Tribune reports. Jaya succumbed to her injuries.
When Nyisha Beemon saw her daughter’s body at the University of Chicago Medical Center, she became so overcome with grief that she began screaming, falling to the floor. Relatives claim that hospital workers became annoyed and complained about Beemon’s behavior, which resulted in officers being called. Relatives say that Beemon was forcefully dragged away by officers and shockingly charged with battery and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors.
Beemon spent the night of her daughter’s murder behind bars before being bonded out. Although the registered nurse is off the hook for the charges, she will still need to work to have her record expunged so that she can continue working.
The Cook County state’s attorney’s office said it does not have the authority to clear criminal records, but will continue to work with Beemon to get the matter resolved, the publication reports.
“This is just step one,” Beemon said while leaving court.
“There was no empathy. There was no sympathy. They treated us horribly,” Nyisha Beemon’s sister, Tiana Beemon, told the Tribune last week.

This has to he one of the worst things I’ve heard. This woman’s daughter was murdered! She sees her lifeless body and scream out in pain and anguish, and she is arrested instead of being consoled! Hospital workers are annoyed? Really??!! Annoyed?? They obviously need training on empathy and sympathy. They have grown so cold to death because they see it all the time. But so what!!!!! That doesn’t give them the right to downplay someone else’s pain!!!
This is very sad, I’ve seen this happen , either console the mothers or let them grieve . Call family to help instead of the police . Wow people are cold
This does not represent nursing. Nursing is a calling. But just like any other profession some are in it only for a paycheck. Nurses are very compassionate and caring. From the nurses pledge, “ I will dedicate myself to devoted service for human welfare”.
Nurses Pledge:
I solemnly pledge myself before God and in the presence of this assembly to pass my life in purity and to practise my profession faithfully.
I will abstain from whatever is deleterious and mischievous, and will not take or knowingly administer any harmful drug.
I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my calling.
With loyalty will I aid the physician in his work, and as a missioner of health, I will dedicate myself to devoted service for human welfare.[1]
I am so freakin ANGRY FOR HER. This poor mother just lost half her heart in that hospital and to be treated like this is just disgusting. How can people be so cruel? How could these officers not see the situation and attempt to console instead of control?! Sending so many prayers to her healing and for her strength. How traumatizing for this GRIEVING MOMMA!!
Wow as a RN myself sometimes when we as a black community we grieve differently than people that looks different than us. Even if I have irate family members when they come to the ER I still show compassion and empathy. No one can tell a mother how to grieve when she loses a child. Thay hospital needs to have sensitivity training ASAP.
Yeah, the hospital workers are heartless SOBs, but what about these damn cops? Why can’t they demonstrate a little cognitive reasoning instead of rushing in to make arrests and escalate things and consequently make everything worse? Couldn’t the cops see the woman was distraught or did they just not give a damn?
She black we as black people don’t get any from the police my deepest syphaty
