Tragedy struck late Sunday night after a gunman opened fire at a Springfield, Missouri gas station.
According to Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams, five people, including a Springfield police officer, were shot and killed in the incident.
The incident occurred at the Kum & Go gas station and convenience store after a car crashed into the establishment. After the crash, police said the gunman ran inside the store and began shooting, striking and killing three civilians.
The first two officers who arrived on the scene were shot, one suffering fatal injuries. As other officers arrived, they found the three victims and the gunman, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.
According to police, the officer, who was killed, has been identified as Officer Christopher Walsh. Walsh had been at the department for three and a half years and was a U.S. Army Veteran, local news reports.
Neither the gunman or the other victims have been identified.
