Former Tallahassee mayor and 2018 Democratic nominee for Florida governor Andrew Gillum says he is entering a rehabilitation facility after a scene at a Miami Beach hotel made headlines.
According to a Miami Beach police report, as covered by the Daily Mail, officers were called to the Mondrian South Beach around 12:55 a.m. last Friday for a guest who was reportedly having a medical emergency. Police said Gillum, 40, was in the room and was too intoxicated to explain what happened. Two other men, Travis, 30, and Aldo, 56, were also there, and the report says Travis was taken to the hospital and was expected to recover.
Police reported finding suspected crystal meth, pills and empty beer bottles in the room. Aldo told officers that he arrived to find Gillum and Travis appearing to be under the influence of an unknown substance. Nobody was reported arrested or charged in connection with the incident.
Gillum put out a statement hours after the story broke. He apologized for alcohol abuse and said he never used meth. He said he was in South Florida for a wedding. Travis told the Miami New Times that he has known Gillum for a while and knew nothing about a wedding.
In his statement, Gillum said: “After a conversation with my family and deep reflection, I have made the decision to seek help, guidance, and enter a rehabilitation facility at this time. This has been a wake up call for me.” He asked that people respect the privacy of his family.
Gillum is married with three children.
