A British teen has died after attempting to take her own life over fears of being self-quarantined with the coronavirus.
19-year-old Emily Owen of King’s Lynn died in a hospital on Sunday, just days after her March 18th suicide attempt.
According to the Sun, Owen informed her relatives of her inability to deal with the isolation over the coronavirus, specifically dealing with “her world closing in, plans being canceled and being stuck inside.”
The 19-year-old had been in critical condition for the four days following her attempt, but on Sunday, her family decided to pull the plug, allowing doctors to remove and prep her organs for donation. Owen’s organs have since been donated to four people, including three children.
“We are heartbroken that we won’t see her breeze through our doors like a tornado of energy again, or hear her distinctive laugh,” read a post by her coworkers at a pub. “She was a big part of our team, and we will miss her enormously.”
“Emily would have wanted you to check on your loved ones in these difficult times,” the post continued. “She believed the fear of the unknown may drive them over the edge and was planning on volunteering to help these people.”
Owen’s sister also released a statement, expressing the family’s devastation.
“Emily was very concerned about coronavirus itself but more concerned about the mental health impact of isolation and the fear of the unknown,” Annabel Owen wrote in a Facebook post, which has since been deleted, as she added that Owen had “high functioning autism” and often struggled to fit in.
“She didn’t want anyone to know, but now she has gone we want to make people know that autism comes in all shapes and sizes,” Annabel wrote.

How did she try to commit suicide? Did she leave a note or tell anyone and did she say it was due to isolation and coronavirus or just thinking out loud she may have had other triggers and on going issues and only mentioned there would be more suicides due to coronavirus isolation because it was on her mind not because she was speaking about herself. Of course it could have pushed her over the edge but it’s quite a stretch to say it’s due to it. Maybe due to losing her job? Also if they want to prevent it happening to others by informing of us how she did it and how who she reached out to or her final words expressing her reasoning would go along way. For example maybe it was just an accidental prescription drug overdose or mixed with alcohol which sadly families still feel they have to hide and protect the person’s image even in death.
