Netflix has reportedly ordered a 40-episodes animated series based on the world of Rovio Entertainment’s popular flightless birds, The Angry Birds.
The series titled Angry Birds: Summer Madness will be based on the video game characters. Each episode, scheduled to be 11 minutes long, will launch sometime in 2021. The series is inspired by The Angry Birds movie franchise. The new series will be developed by the original game’s producer Rovio Entertainment and children’s production house Cake, which already sells Rovio’s TV shows worldwide.
The new show will focus on birds Red, Bomb, and Chuck. There will also be new birds added to the flock as the tween birds attend summer camp under the problematic guidance of counselor Mighty Eagle. The series will be filled with comedy, including explosive shenanigans and summertime adventures, as the birds will be pushing boundaries and breaking the rules as they are known to do.
“Angry Birds have been a true phenomenon for kids around the world, and we’re excited to bring them home to the nest at Netflix where they will be angrier and bird-ier than ever,” stated Curtis Lelash, director of original animated series at Netflix.
“Angry Birds animated content plays a key role in our long-term franchise strategy. After more than a decade in hit games, blockbuster movies, and licensed products, this is the Angry Birds’ first foray into a long-form series. We’re delighted to continue our partnership with Cake and can’t wait to unveil the world of ‘Angry Birds: Summer Madness’ to viewers on Netflix,” said Rovio CMO Ville Heijari.⠀⠀⠀
The two “Angry Birds” movies released in 2016 and 2019 have reportedly grossed over $500 million at the global box office.
“Angry Birds are about to smash the small screen, and we are thrilled to be making the journey with Netflix as our global partner,” added Cake CCO and managing director Ed Galton.
