Grupo Modelo, the company that produces Corona Beer, will be suspending the production of the beer due to the global pandemic. Grupo Modelo posted the announcement via Twitter.

The Mexican government has ceased operations on all non-essential businesses, public and private businesses, until April 30 in an attempt to stop the spread of the COVID-19. John Hopkins reported that Mexico has more than 1,500 cases and 50 deaths.

According to the statement by Grupo Modelo, they’re ready to execute their plan to “guarantee the supply of beer” if the Mexican government decides to include breweries as an essential business.

Bill Newlands, CEO of Constellation Brands, the distribution company that handles and imports Grupo Modelo’s beers in the United States, said there is ample supply to meet consumer demand and doesn’t expect shortages in the near term.

Constellation is reporting 8.9% growth from beer sales for the first three months of the year. Modelo and Corona are, of course, their top sellers. March saw a 24% growth compares to last year’s numbers.

Beer and other alcohol sales are steadily increasing as the majority of the country is currently under shelter in place orders. Sales reports from Nielsen show beer sales have increased 34% year to date.
