Los Angeles experiences the cleanest air the city has ever had in decades amid coronavirus social distancing order.
If you live in L.A., you know the air is just not the cleanest. Between the endless layers of smog and hoards of trash tucked in every nook and cranny, air pollution has plagued the city of angels. However, with the recent orders to stay home amid the COVID-19 pandemic, residents can breathe clearly now that the smog is gone.
According to Complex Media, the air pollution has decreased immensely, making this the cleanest era of air in the city in decades. As of Monday, Los Angeles has been ranked the No. 1 city in the world for air quality, according to CBS Los Angeles. California energy company executive, Cody Hill, said this the cleanest air the city has seen since 1995.
Hill spoke to TMZ, saying March 2020 could be one of the best months at least since the 1940s.” He added that “there was huge migration as we ramped up aircraft production in the L.A. basin to fight WW2.” Due to the city-wide shutdown, traffic has dropped tremendously, causing smog and emissions to rapidly decrease. The New York Times reported on March 18 that L.A.’s rush-hour traffic moved 71 percent faster than it usually would on a Wednesday afternoon.
This Tuesday, LA was given an AQI ration of nine from IQAir, L.A. The city is now in the top brackets for clean air, competing with Salt Lake City, Utah, and Denver, Colorado. Both cities are well-known for their clean air and were ranked as having the cleanest air in the world on the same day, with a three AGI rating.
