BeBe Winans, legendary gospel singer and part of the iconic Winans Family, revealed in a recent interview that several of his family members tested positive for the coronavirus.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Winans called into The Joe Madison Show on SiriusXM radio to discuss his diagnosis and revealed that in the beginning, he didn’t think he’d catch it.
“We look at television and various things that’s going on around us, we somehow say, that can’t happen to me for some reason. I don’t know why, but sometimes we believe that,” he said.
While not sure where exactly he contracted the virus, he suspects it was during a recent trip home to Detroit from New York to attend a funeral. Winans expressed how important it is to stay home because he contracted the virus from “just a little travel.”
Not long after returning home, the symptoms began.
“I just started coughing out of nowhere, and you get concerned,” he explained. “Then, the fatigue came on, and the chills and appetite went away. And I called my doctor, and he said, ‘Okay BeBe, stay home, and this is what you do. As you know, you can’t just go to the hospital, and if you’re not in need of a respirator, they won’t even take you.'”
However, BeBe wasn’t the only Winans to contract the virus.
His brother, Pastor Marvin Winans, was admitted to the hospital with a fever and pneumonia for about “four or five days,” while his mother Grammy award-winning musical artist Delores Winans experienced symptoms for about five days, PEOPLE reports.
Thankfully, all three family members have recovered from the virus. Now, Winans says he is “just grateful.”
“Because it could have been a different outcome for me and my family,” he continued.” So, I’ve learned to be more grateful for life itself. Forget about homes and automobiles and all these things. You can’t take none of that. That means nothing to you when your health is gone.”
He also talked about what he’s been doing during his time of self-isolation and said he even picked up a new hobby.
“I’m a man of faith and just raised in, and in my mind, I’m just concrete in the subject matter that God is greater than everything,” he added. “Yet, and still, it’s so important for us to use common sense. So, being on the other side of it now, I’m just grateful that the word, I just finished my run and through the whole run, I was just saying, God, I thank you. …Keep the spirit moving. You can sit still and keep your spirit moving. I read a whole bunch. I didn’t know I could read so well.”
