Cyntoia Brown became known in 2017 when celebrities, including #KimKardashian, shed light on her story and worked towards freeing her from prison.
Now, in true Netflix fashion, the streaming giant has turned the story into a documentary, titled ‘’Murder To Mercy.”
Brown served 15 years in prison for aggravated robbery and first-degree murder for killing Jonny Allen when she was just 16. Allen picked her up at a Sonic Drive-In for sex in Nashville, Tennessee.
However, the incident went downhill quickly when she thought he was reaching for a gun. She then pulled a gun out of her purse and opened fire on the 43-year-old, she told authorities.
From there, she fled the scene with not only Allen’s money, but his pickup truck as well, NPR reports.
“When I was 16, I did a horrible thing,” Brown said in the newly released trailer. “I do pray that you show me mercy and that you give me a second chance.”
While prosecutors suggested she intended to rob and murder Allen from the beginning, Brown claimed she was only protecting herself as she felt she was in danger.
Brown’s plea to be released from prison quickly went viral with the help of a few celebrities who brought awareness to her story, including Rihanna.
Last August, Brown was released from prison.
But, since the release of the trailer, Brown has revealed that she had no part in giving any input or insight on what really happened, in the upcoming film.
“While I was still incarcerated, a producer who has old footage of me made a deal with Netflix for an UNAUTHORIZED documentary, set to be released soon,” she wrote on Social Media. “My husband and I were as surprised as everyone else when we first heard the news because we did not participate in any way.”
Brown revealed that she’s in the process of telling her story, her own way.
However, I am currently in the process of sharing my story, in the right way, in full detail, and in a way that depicts and respects the woman I am today. While I pray that this film highlights things wrong in our justice system, I had nothing to do with this documentary,” she added.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
