‘Boy Meets World’ Cast Member Apologizes After Trina McGee Calls Out Racism On Set

The actress who portrayed Angela Moore in the 90’s U.S. sitcom, Boy Meets World, has revealed that a male colleague from the show has apologized recently for a racist joke that he made years ago.

In January, 50-year-old Trina McGee, posted a series of tweets claiming that she was “called aunt Jemima on set during hair and makeup.” She also alleged that she was labeled a “bitter bitch” during one incident as she waited for a scene to wrap rehearsing. Another co-star also allegedly told the actress that “I don’t want anyone in my scene that is female or around me” while they were filming ’Boy Meets World.’

In a turn of events this week, McGee revealed during an Instagram Live that the male colleague, later identified as Will Friedle, who called her “Aunt Jemima” had apologized for his comment all those years ago. According to McGee, the co-star said that the inappropriate comment was a teachable moment for him and has since changed his life.

McGee went on to profess her love for her former castmates, “even without getting some of the love back,” though she did not elaborate on what she meant by that. More surprisingly, McGee claimed that her Twitter confession earlier in the year was simply a result of her “PMSing” and that she “didn’t know” if she would refer to her experience as racism today in her clearer headspace.

After news surfaced of McGee’s revelation, she explained the incident further, highlighting the fact that “this should and could be a teaching moment for all.”

“FOR THE RECORD: WILL FRIEDLE the man responsible for AuntJemmagate, apologized to me 22 years ago and again days ago in a three-page letter,” McGee said. “We talked more on it and he acknowledged that he really wasn’t educated enough in his early twenties to know he was truly offending me. THIS SHOULD AND COULD BE A TEACHING MOMENT FOR ALL. For all people of all races or different backgrounds. He has conveyed to me how much this has changed his perception of comedy. And humanity. We all fall short of sensitivity at times, but let’s be real on what EXTREME RACISM IS.”

“I believe extreme racism is when my grandfather had to leave South Carolina in the middle of the night because the clerk had given him the wrong change and he pointed this out to the white store owner and was threatened with lynching,” she continued. “Scuddie McGee left South Carolina that night for fear of his life. Bringing his small family along with him to New Jersey. I’m not backing down on the truth. It’s stands. Will apologized to me and I forgave him, I then apologized to him for making the statements public because his joke came out of just not knowing, not viciousness and he forgave me. That’s what friends do. Now get back to washing your hands and surviving this pandemic and let love and hope be the next pandemic.”
