When Drake releases a new single, it’s pretty much going to be a smash by default. The Toronto rapper has undoubtedly established his place in the rap and R&B game as one of the greatest artists of our generation.
Most recently, Drizzy released “Toosie Slide,” which, of course, debuted at #1 on the charts. The song itself is catchy, with a fairly simple dance to coincide. He croons on the chorus: “It go right foot up, left foot, slide / Left foot up, right foot, slide / Basically, I’m sayin’, either way, we ’bout to slide / Can’t let this one slide.”
While many have been active on Tik Tok doing the “Toosie Slide” dance, some music critics feel strongly about the simplicity of the record. Radio personality Charlamagne Tha God is one, going on record on his The Brilliant Idiots comedy podcast on the Loud Speakers Network to express himself. The Breakfast Club co-host voiced his opinions that he’s not about Drizzy chasing trends.
For this week’s episode, titled Anti Social Distancers with co-host Andrew Schulz, Charlamagne
revealed how he’s about as unexcited about 6ix9ine as Drake’s “Toosie Slide.”
“I think it’s wack. I think it’s beneath Drake,” Charlamagne said around the [1:43] mark. “When you’re the biggest artist in the world, when you’re the biggest rapper in the world, I don’t like to see you chasing trends. Why be a surfer when you’re a fucking wave? I just didn’t respect it.”
Charlamagne continued to explain why he doesn’t feel it’s a fit for Tik Tok, everybody’s latest obsession during the quarantine.
“The shit might still work, but it just don’t seem organic,” he said. “A lot of times with those TikTok dances, they’re organic. It’s a song people like and somebody does something to it, it goes. It was like it felt too forced. Too corporate. Too industry. Drake has built himself up into such a way that he doesn’t have to do that shit, man.”
He added, “That’s a record Drake could have gave somebody.”
