The city of Miami has not recorded a single homicide within seven weeks. It’s the first time in 63 years that the city has gone seven weeks without a single murder.
According to reports from CBS News, no reported homicides occurred between February 17 and April 12, a total of seven weeks and six days.
A Miami Police Department spokesman tells CBS, ”We can say that it’s due to our high police visibility, attributed with the pandemic and the stay at home order.”
Although the seven-week streak recently ended, with two reported homicides, it’s still by far the longest homicide-free stretch since 1957, when Miami went nine weeks and three days without any reported murders. In 1960, a span of six weeks and five days.
Since Miami Mayor Francis Suarez declared a stay-home order on March 12, several other crimes have decreased in Miami.
CBS News reports violence crimes in other cities like Baltimore has reported a 34% decrease in assault crimes, Los Angeles homicides dropped by 21%, and New York recorded felony crimes fell by 17%.
The decrease in the crime rate can be attributed to the stay-at-home orders implemented by the local and state officials. Miami stay-at-home orders are expecting to expire April 30, unless Mayor Suarez plans to extend the order.
