Albert Johnson of Utah is accused of breaking into the home of Katherine and Tony Butterfield and fatally shooting both while their three young children slept upstairs.Â
According to ‪People.com‬, ‪1:30 am Saturday‬; police were dispatched to the family home after a neighbor reported hearing a woman screaming and gunshots. On arrival, police discovered Katherine’s body inside, and her husband’s body in the backyard. It appears there was a fight between Tony and the suspect.
“Despite fighting for their lives, they were brutally shot and killed while their 3 children, ages 4 and under, slept upstairs,” the family’s close friends said on GoFundMe. “While we are so grateful that their children were not harmed, we are devastated at the loss of their loving parents.”
Johnson’s wife, Sani Johnson, has been charged with tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice after helping her husband discard bloody clothes. In an interview with detectives, she allegedly revealed her husband knew the couple and once tried to get a job with Tony Butterfield’s landscaping business. The night of the incident, he came home around 3 or ‪4 am‬ saying someone stabbed him, and his life was over. He quickly showered and left home.Â
Sani confessed she cleaned her apartment of blood and attempted throwing away his bloody shoes and clothes after hearing of the couple’s death. Albert Johnson was arrested Wednesday in Sacramento, California, where he served prison time once before.
The motive remains unclear as authorities are unable to provide additional information. It is unknown if Johnson has been charged for the crime or if he or Sani have an attorney.
