As some states are looking to reopen in the coming days, Dr. Fauci is calling for double the amount of COVID-19 testing.
“We probably should get up to twice that as we get into the next several weeks, and I think we will,” said Fauci, the White House coronavirus task forces’ top immunologist public health expert, according to Politico. Â
Dr. Fauci has recently made claims that, as of now, the U.S. goes through almost two million tests a week.
While positive COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Public Health Officials have called for extensive coronavirus testing to combat its spread, but the United States has repeatedly failed to do so.
The lack of increased testing is said to be heightened by backed-up laboratories where results have been pushed back.
But, Dr. Fauci believes that citizens that are infected with the virus should get proper testing so that they can be removed from society, preventing them from infecting others.
The expert also added that the increasing numbers of positive coronavirus tests could be the result of a lack of testing.
Such rates should only account for “maybe less than 10 percent,” but America has positive COVID-19 rates of nearly 20 percent. The week of April 5 saw an increase alone from several labs.
It has been alleged through several outlets that the coronavirus task team has taken issues with some of Dr. Fauci’s media interviews.
In an interview with TIME, Dr. Fauci discussed his thoughts on increasing COVID-19 testing.
“We absolutely need to significantly ramp up, not only the number of tests but the capacity to actually perform them […] I am not overly confident right now at all that we have what it takes to do that.”
Not taking well to the expert’s comments, Trump disputed Dr. Fauci’s claims during a press briefing.
“I don’t agree with him on that, no, I think we’re doing a great job on testing,” Trump said.
Another disagreement was brought to the surface when Dr. Fauci disputed the Celebrity-In-Chief’s claim of COVID-19, possibly not returning this year. This would lead to such speculations of a tiff between the two.
“We will have coronavirus in the fall,” Dr. Fauci said. “I am convinced of that.”
In an interview with NBC News, pulmonologist, and global health policy expert, Dr. Vin Gupta gave his opinion on Dr. Fauci and the disagreements on the critical public health information.
“If you’re somebody who aspires to have an impact on public health as a physician or provider, you should look no further than Dr. Fauci or Dr. Birx, which spans administrations[…] I think at the end of the day, the president needs Fauci more than Fauci needs any of this.”
