Black Man, 25, Shot and Killed in Georgia While Jogging; Two White Gunmen Aren’t Arrested or Charged

A black man who was believed to be unarmed was shot and killed in Georgia by two white men, and neither of the suspects have been arrested or charged.

Ahmaud Arbery, 25, was going for a run in Brunswick, Georgia, in February when he ran past 64-year-old Gregory McMichael. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

According to a police report, McMichael told his son Travis, 34, to grab their guns because McMichael thought Arbery resembled a robbery suspect from around the area.

The father and son hopped in their truck with a shotgun and revolver and started following Arbery. McMichael said he told Arbery to “stop” because he wanted to talk to him.

According to the police report, there was a struggle over the shotgun, and Arbery was shot at least twice before he died.

Neither McMichael nor his son have been charged or arrested in connection with Arbery’s death, and a prosecutor has argued that the men are protected under Georgia’s citizen’s arrest law, adding that Travis acted out of self-defense.

Brunswick NAACP president Rev. John Davis Perry II said the shooting is “troubling,” according to the New York Times, while Arbery’s mother Wanda Cooper said coronavirus has gotten in the way of protesting for justice for her son.

“We can’t do anything because of this corona stuff,” she said. “We thought about walking out where the shooting occurred, just doing a little march, but we can’t be out right now.”

People from the area remember Arbery as a high school football start who loved to run and stayed in shape.
