San Diego County law enforcement is looking to file criminal charges against a white male wearing a Ku Klux Klan hood while shopping at Von’s grocery store over the weekend.
On Saturday, the unidentified white male stunned shoppers and employees as he nonchalantly wore his KKK hood as he pushed his shopping cart throughout Von’s grocery store in the San Diego suburb of Santee.
The incident took place one day after county officials required face mask be worn while in public to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, multiple store clerks asked the male to remove the hood or leave the store.
After removing the hood, the male paid for his groceries and left the store without further incident.
Although no formal complaint was filed, Deputies are looking to pursue hate crime charges against the male, according to the San Diego County Sheriff Department.
” The Sheriff’s Department does not condone hate or any acts of intolerance in our communities,” the Sheriff’s department told reporters in a news release.
Santee Mayor John Minto condemned the incident in a statement released on Monday,
” Many thanks to all who stepped forward to curtail this sad reminder of intolerance,” he said. “Santee, its leaders, and I will not tolerate such behavior. Santee and its citizens are great, and this particular individual’s actions are not representative of us as a people and a wonderful city.”
