Georgia police are investigating the death of two sisters whose bodies were found under a bridge with bags covering their heads.
The bodies of 19-year-old Vanita Richardson and 30-year-old Truvenia Campbell were discovered Wednesday morning by Georgia Department of Transportation workers. The workers found them under the Etowah Bridge new Rome in Floyd, County, near the south bank of the Etowah River, People reports. The story was first reported by Rome News-Tribune.
GBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brian Johnston said the sisters were “apparently dropped over the bridge.” The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a release that their clothes were torn and there were shotgun shells found near their bodies. The release said they were located in an underpass at Loop 1 Etowah Bridge.
Investigators are now looking into the motive behind the women’s death and how long they had been left there. People reports that calls about their bodies came in around 11 a.m. The medical examiner has not released a cause of death, but the case has been categorized as a homicide. “She was like my sister,” said Campbell’s childhood friend Kayla Dodson to 11 Alive. “She was a loving, caring person. I’m just heartbroken.”
Dodson said the women’s family is devastated. “They’re really upset. It’s just a really hard time for them. Everybody is just sad. They’re just mulling over her death because [Campbell] was really well known in Rome.” Floyd County Schools issued a statement on Twitter about Richardson. “We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by the news of the death of one of our students, Vanita Richardson, who was scheduled to graduate next Saturday. We extend our deepest sympathies to the Armuchee Community and her friends and family at this time,” the post read.⠀⠀⠀
“If you were traveling in that area and saw anything suspicious between Tuesday @ 10:30 p.m. & Wednesday @ 11 a.m., investigators need your help. Please contact the GBI at 1-800-597-TIPS (8477) with any information pertinent to the investigation,” said GBI in its release.
