The iconic female rapper MC Lyte is teaming up with Bentley Kyle Evans, executive producer of sitcoms like Martin and The Jamie Foxx Show, for a new scripted series coming to AMC Networks’ Urban Movie Channel (UMC).
The half-hour sitcom will follow an up-and-coming female high school rapper, social media influencer, and foster kid, who thinks she’s the hottest thing to happen to the game since Cardi B. MC Lyte will also star in the series, playing a label executive who helps the young girl navigate the music industry.
But wait! There’s more. UMC and the American Black Film Festival have launched a nationwide “Shoot Your Shot” casting call in an effort to find fresh talent for a co-starring role on the show. Interested contestants 18 years or older; will need to submit a 3-minute “about me” video, along with 2 contemporary monologue performances (1 comedy and 1 drama), and a rap performance of 1 verse of their choice (original or cover). Five finalists will be chosen to perform at ABFF later this year. One winner will be selected to star alongside MC Lyte in the show.
“The opportunity to pair an industry legend like MC Lyte with up-and-coming talent we’ve yet to discover is the exact principle on which both UMC and ABFF were founded. This partnership is the perfect springboard to launch this exciting new project from Bentley Kyle Evans,” said Brett Dismuke, Chief Content Officer at UMC.
Submissions will be accepted from May 18-June 30th and can be sent to [email protected]. Leah Daniels Butler is head of casting for the talent search. The first episode of ‘Partners in Rhyme’ will premiere at the 2021 ABFF.
