After briefly appearing in The Last Dance as one of Michael Jordan’s opponents, former #UtahJazz player Karl Malone is facing backlash as his past comes back to bite.
One person took to Twitter to remind people that Malone, as a 20-year-old basketball player, impregnated a 13-year-old, which led to the birth of his son Demetress.
“Karl Malone is pure scum,” a Twitter user wrote. “How you 20 years old in college and messing with a 13-year-old child… that’s rape. Then you don’t claim your kid or pay child support… then want to be a dad magically after the kid graduates high school…..TRASH.”
However, Malone’s other son, who was born years after, took to social media to clear his dad’s name.
“I’m probably going to get a lot of backfire for this,” KJ said. “My mom is probably going to get mad at me. But at the end of the day, I’m doing this for my family. Just standing up for my dad. He made a mistake, but at the end of the day, he’s still a great dad. He still takes care of Demetress. Demetress is my brother, I love him to death.”
Demetress Bell is no stranger to the public eye. Demetress played football in college at Northwestern State after having shied away from anything that had to do with Malone.
In 2008, Bell was drafted to the Buffalo Bills, where he played for four seasons before joining the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012 and the Dallas Cowboys in 2013, where he was released not long after.
Bell and Malone haven’t always had a relationship. In 2008, Bell revealed to ESPN’s Jemele Hill that he had no relationship with his father.
“I treat it as if my mother went to the sperm bank,” Bell said at the time. “I don’t hate him for not being in my life. It made me a better person. … I grew up around good people. … I never turned to a father figure. I was lucky. I didn’t need one. I’m happy. I don’t need anything else.”
However, in 2014, Bell and Malone began to work out their relationship. According to a 2018 report, Bell revealed that he and his father talk and text “nearly every day.”
