It’s Memorial Day, a day that we honor the fallen heroes who protected and served. We’ve put together a list of 10 All-American movies to watch to wrap your celebration tonight.
1 – American Sniper – Bradley Cooper plays Navy Seal Chris Kyle, who becomes one of the most lethal snipers in American history and serves four tours of duty in Iraq. His accurate shooting skills save countless lives but make him a target.
2- Glory – Following the Battle of Antietam, Col. Robert Gould Shaw, played by Matthew Broderick, is offered command of the United States’ first all-African-American regiment. Escaped slave, Trip, played by Denzel Washington, and a gravedigger, Morgan Freeman, are enlisted to fight in battle.
3- Independence Day – Starring Will Smith, the epic adventure film, sees a team fighting to save the world over Fourth of July weekend.
4- White House Down – A Capitol police officer, Channing Tatum, is denied his dream job of protecting the president, played by Jamie Foxx. A military group attacks the White House, and Tatum’s character needs to save the president and the country.
5- Buffalo Soldiers – At the end of the Civil War, a slave, played by Danny Glover, is liberated and signs up as a sergeant in the first all African-American U.S. Army unit, but once he’s there his commanding officers are racists.
6- Top Gun – Tom Cruise plays a hotshot U.S. fighter pilot Maverick and fights to be the top of his class at flight school.
7- Captain America – Set during WWII, Chris Evans’ character wants to join the military, but he’s rejected because he’s too small. He takes part in an experimental program that turns him into supersoldier Captain America.
8- Black Hawk Down- Set in 1993, the movie follows the U.S. special forces sent into Somalia using Black Hawk helicopters to lower soldiers to the ground.
9- The Hurt Locker – Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie play sergeants and specialists in the U.S. Army, part of an Iraq War Explosive Ordnance Disposal team, who are targeted by insurgents.
10 – Pearl Harbor – This drama starring Ben Affleck and Josh Harnett depicts the events of the attack on military base Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.
