In a recent interview with Hip Hop Radio Veteran Devin Steel, Trey Songz got candid about why he decided to keep his family life so private.
The R&B singer is the father to 1-year-old son, Noah, and unlike other celebrities, Trey did not disclose the maternity of his child’s mother until a month ago. Following the celebration of Noah’s first birthday, Trey finally put an end to the mystery and posted a picture of his child’s mother on his Instagram page.
“I am obsessed; we did that, YOU did that! You’re a great mother, and you deal with all the extra’s very gracefully. I’ll always be eternally grateful to you, Noah’s Mumma,” his captioned read. To protect her and Noah from Instagram’s “negative Nancies,” he disabled his comments section, Bossip reports.
As for the interview with Steel, Trey discussed new music, maturing, and what all his fans wanted to know- why he chose to keep his family under wraps.
During the interview, Trey expressed he’s a “very private person,” and it was a huge decision he chose to make. Still, he knew that the overall sense of negativity is winning in the social media atmosphere. The birth of his son was a moment he wanted to experience and protect from public scrutiny.
“As many people love it in a positive sense, it’s gon be negativity. So, it’s really a sense of letting go of the control that you have when you let yourself be that vulnerable. You know, for me, I know my fans are happy for me. I know that in the beginning, it was very much like, ‘Who’s the mother?’ That’s one thing I don’t like about sharing my business.” The moment that you allow a passing comment by someone you do not know to affect you and f*ck up your whole day or have your heart—that’s when you too far gone.”
Trey took time during the interview to reflect on what caused him to take a break from Instagram. Besides the negativity that he and many other public entertainers endure, he mentioned the fact that he would wake up, brush his teeth, and jump right on IG like most of us do. But he knew that’s not how he wanted to spend his time, and although he believes social media is a good way to stay connected, he said it’s also good to take a break to get a greater self-awareness because we don’t see how much we become concerned with others and how unfocused we are on things that matter.
Trey announced his excitement to get back into music and admitted he was not in the right mindset to commit within the past couple of years. But there is something that feels good in him right now, and he wants to help people because he knows music is soothing and healing. “I know my fans miss my voice and miss the music that I do create.”
