As protests continue to happen nationwide in response to #GeorgeFloyd and #BreonnaTaylor being murdered at the hands of police, it’s been reported that the officers have fatally shot a Louisville man amid protests, however, their body cameras weren’t activated.
According to USA Today, Mayor Greg Fischer confirmed on Monday that local authorities, along with National Guard personnel, were involved in the fatal shooting of #DavidMcAtee, the owner of a barbecue business.
The shooting took place Monday morning, when local authorities and National Guard troops on the scene monitoring protests attempted to break up a “large crowd” in the parking lot of Dino’s Food Mart shortly after midnight Someone began to fire shots at the police and the officials in response shot back, fatally shooting McAtee.
According to McAtee’s nephew, Dino’s was right next to his establishment.
It has yet to be reported if McAtee was the one who fired shots at the officers. According to Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad, “several persons of interest” were interviewed following the shooting. It’s also unclear if multiple officers or guardsmen shot back as a response to being targeted first.
No one else was injured during the incident.
“This type of institutional failure will not be tolerated,” Fischer said in response to the officers’ body cameras not being activated at the time of the shooting.
Governor Andy Beshear has ordered the Kentucky State Police to investigate the incident.
“Right now, I can’t tell you the feeling I have. All I can say— when a mother loses her child, a piece of you goes along with that child,” Odessa Riley, McAtee’s mother, told the Courier-Journal, in Kentucky.
Fischer has confirmed that Conrad has been terminated, after he previously announced his resignation last month, to retire at the end of June. A nightly 9 PM-6:30 AM crew, has also been extended to June 8.
The shooting occurred after a 9 PM curfew had been put in place on Sunday for the city.
The city of Louisville has been protesting for #BreonnaTaylor, 26, a technician who was murdered by police officials in March “serving a warrant inside her apartment.”
Many witnesses revealed that they knew McAtee or had eaten his barbecue, the outlet reports. As approximately 100 people lined up and watched the Louisville Metro Police Department, many of those people were either residents in the neighborhood or had been in the area protesting.
According to Barbara Sexton Smith, state police were also at the scene, and that their investigations “typically take more time,” the outlet reports.
