According to BuzzFeed News, an internal memo received by Starbucks employees last week explained that wearing any attire that referenced the Black Lives Matter movement, was a violation of company policy. The dress code policy prohibits any religious, political, or personal accessories. Employees who spoke with Buzzfeed, all pointed out that the coffee giant allows buttons and attire celebrating the LGBTQ community and marriage equality. Adding that the company even encourages and hands them out every year in June during Pride Month.

Amid nationwide protests following the death of George Floyd, management argued that wearing clothing and accessories highlighting Black Lives Matter could be misunderstood and even went as far as suggesting it could potentially incite violence. Calvin Benson, a barista at an Atlanta location, called the memo, “disappointing in ways I can’t express in words. That statement prioritizes those who feel discomfort over Black lives.” Many Starbucks employees echoed his statements calling the company’s public statement “performance activism.” My skin color incites violence at Starbucks. Should I not come to work?” Benson asked. “It is silencing, and Starbucks is complicit. Now more than ever, Starbucks needs to stand with us.”

A company spokesperson confirmed the memo’s authenticity to Buzzfeed and explained that the reason such things are apart of company policy, is “to create a safe and welcoming” environment for both customers and employees.

“We respect all of our partners’ opinions and beliefs, and encourage them to bring their whole selves to work while adhering to our dress code policy,” the spokesperson said. They also added that the company is dedicated to helping end “systemic racism,” but that the dress code policy would remain in place. “Our movements are just too controversial for Starbucks to stand behind,” Benson said.
