A North Carolina man was arrested in June 2020 after Tampa police said he tried to take a 4 year old boy from a hotel room near the Tampa airport.
According to the Tampa Police Department, Desmond, 31, entered a room at the Hampton Inn Tampa Airport Westshore on Saturday evening at about 6:21 p.m. Police say three children were on the bed while their mother was in the bathroom. When the mother heard the children yelling, she ran out and saw the man trying to grab the young boy. Police have not said why he was in Florida or why he went to that room, and the mother has not been identified.
Reports say hotel guests across the hall heard the commotion and rushed to help. Police say the man followed them and kept fighting, eventually pulling the child into the hallway while the mother held on. An off duty Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputy who happened to be there stepped in and held him until Tampa officers arrived.
Desmond was arrested and charged with one count of attempted kidnapping and two counts of burglary with battery. He was held in the Hillsborough County jail on $80,000 bail. Police said neither the child nor the mother was hurt. The reports available at the time did not include a statement from him. He is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
