A video shared by TMZ shows a Lyft passenger in Reno, Nevada, going on a heated rant at his driver after being asked to wear a face covering during a ride.
According to TMZ, the ride took place on May 28. In the clip, the passenger says he does not have a mask and tells the driver he does not believe the coronavirus is real. The driver explains that he has family members who have been affected by the virus.
TMZ reports the passenger then mocked the driver’s accent and used slurs against him. The man, who appears to be in his 50s, also claims he had a binding contract with the driver to take him home. The driver ends the ride early and asks him to get out, and the passenger threatens the driver with violence.
The driver says he will call the police, and the passenger finally leaves the car, saying he plans to take his complaint to Lyft.
TMZ says it reached out to Lyft, which reportedly confirmed the rider has been banned from the platform and said it is checking in on the driver. A Lyft spokesperson told TMZ the behavior in the video is despicable and that discrimination is not tolerated. The passenger has not been publicly identified, and no response from him was reported.
